…more about our very warm welcome by Julie and Mike in the next few days: stay tuned!
Pics of the day:
After some experiences at Mumbai International Airport (we paid 7 CHF for a 50 meters luggage-transportation; security check was not worth the name; lounge was dark with some broken lights, providing a “disco” feeling 🙂 ), we had a nice overnight flight with JetAirways: Business Class seats in fishbone configuration: full flat seats and good service.
In Hong Kong we stayed at Holiday Inn Express (Causeway Bay): small, but OK, rooms, centrally located and service as expected. Hong Kong was our last chance to get a visa for Australia (well, to get Rene a tourist visa, as Michelle was granted hers already during our stay in India), as we planned almost everything for 123 days of travelling round the world, but had overseen the requirement to apply for an online visa for “down under”…thanks to the support and effort by the Australian embassy in Hong Kong, we got the visa 48 hrs before departure to Sydney.
Hong Kong was a very positive experience: clean, organized, reasonably priced (e.g. least expensive Apple products in the world, but still not at the bargain level) and full of sights. Despite the fact, that we will be back in HK for another 5 days, Michelle managed to organize “Complete Hong Kong by foot in 2 days” 🙂 … we did The Park, The Peak, The Botanical Gardens, The Star Ferry, Kowloon and China Town. We also created a new version of dumplings, when Michelle dropped hers into the tea cup, trying to manage the little slimy wonton with chop sticks.
We left HK by China Eastern Airlines, flying to Sydney via Shanghai. Again, surprisingly positive: good service, Western and Chinese style food selection and almost flat lie seats (inflight entertainment system offered an excellent choice) for our 10.5 hrs overnight flight. We almost managed to leave on time in Shanghai, despite the fact, that 3 A330 planes (= 1’000 passengers) got boarded at the same time through the same gate: “organized chaos”!
…Sydney, here we come!

HAPPY DIWALI…a city goes mad!!!
We are back in Mumbai (last stop in India before we head off for Hong Kong), but this time in the more touristy southern Mumbai.
We are staying at the intercontinental hotel on Marine drive which at night is often referred to as the “queen’s necklace” due to the street lamps which are lit around this bay. However for Diwali this street is the place to light your firework fountains, firecrackers, rockets and Catherine wheels. Crowds turn out in their thousands to this wide pavement street to take their turn to light their fireworks. From the hotel Dome bar you have a unique view over the bay and the firework rockets all around, also the opportunity to light your own lantern to send your Diwali message. Photos and video do not do justice to the chaos of the 2 hours or so that the fireworks were let off, and even more surprisingly for a city which generally struggles with rubbish, there was no signs of the fireworks on the street by 7am the next morning.
The historical buildings to see in Mumbai largely relate to the colonial period with the Gateway of India being one of the top tourist attractions. The UNESCO site of Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus or Victoria Terminus as it was previously called was also worth a visit, it is the busiest train station in India with both long distance and local trains departing from here.

We definitely recommend our hotel & beach resort The Leela Goa: http://www.theleela.com/locations/goa
Day 5 & following: Goa, Goa, Goa
We have arrived in Goa…had quite some flight from Kolkata via Mumbai. After a warm welcome and 50 minutes trip by car, we arrived in our beach resort The Leela Goa. Indian-style reception (including coconut drink) and another “procedure” for check-in and explanations 🙂
…relaxing time in a wonderful hotel. The resort has a fantastic garden, pool and very enjoyable facilities, such as spa, beach restaurant and beach sun lounges underneath palms. The food is T.O.P. (tasty, original, plenty). The hotel does its best to get rid of the mosquitoes. So far (touch wood), not so many bites. The weather is dry, warm and blue skies…
We decided to “leave” paradise gardens for a trip in Goa’s surroundings. We hired a taxi to bring us to a spice plantation (very interesting, how many spices can grow at one farm…and many of them, we all do know: cinnamon (Zimt), lemon grass, ginger (Ingwer), nutmeg (Muskatnuss), turmeric (Gelbwurz)), Old Goa (catholic churches and cathedrals from the Portuguese colonial times) and Fort Aguada (some bricks on top of a hill, plus lighthouse 🙂 ).
The Leela organized a BBQ dinner at the beach: choice of lobster, beef, chicken, lamb, fish, veggies, and rice 😉 …accompanied by Cuban flamenco dancing (we tried our best).

Day Three:
We flew from Mumbai Domestic Airport to India’s third largest city, Kolkata. Our Jet Airways flight was in time, food was Indian style and tasty. Our Swissotel pickup brought us in no time to the hotel. We were welcomed and the hotel’s facilities were explained in epic ways…check-in took some time; not because of any waiting time, but due to the variety of things to be explained :-). Our room was (still is) large, modern and a typical Swiss understatement: we enjoyed. In the evening, we met with Ruma and Nityananda, both have worked with Rene in the recent past. We enjoyed an Indian meal with a Swiss twist in the hotel’s Indian restaurant (Naan bread stuffed with Swiss cheese).
Day Four:
Nityananda picked us up from the hotel for a sightseeing tour around Kolkata. Sunday’s traffic is convenient and we were able to enjoy a lot of sights by car (including “holy” cows 🙂 ). We also stopped at Victoria Memorial, for which we left the car; our first experience with close contact to life in Kolkata. We consider this city more polluted than Mumbai; however, there was no situation of danger, begging or pickpocketing at all. Nityananda invited us for lunch at his house: we enjoyed his family’s hospitality, food and stories about life in this city and India in general. Later in the afternoon, we met with Ruma again for coffee, tea and crepes in one of the other malls of Kolkata. Malls seem to play an important role in socializing and meeting. We’ve very much enjoyed the good company: Thank you, Ruma and Nitya!

Obey the traffic rules … 🙂
Day One (and Two) of our RTW tour have provided a great start:
On time departure from Zurich, on time arrival in Mumbai. SWISS Business is offering merging cuisine: Samosa with Roesti :-)… Inflight entertainment with latest blockbusters: the both of us enjoyed a variety of good movies. Immigration within minutes and luggage came in reasonable time. First traffic experience on our way to Holiday Inn: Welcome to another world, full of cars, Tuc Tuc’s and to the world’s craziest drivers.
Despite the time difference of 4.5 hrs, we managed to sleep “in the zone”; however, we missed the breakfast 😉 . Day Two:
We discovered our rooftop infinity pool (unlike Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, the area is almost empty), spa and gym. Late afternoon was dedicated to a tour by “Cool Taxi” and Tuc Tuc, both were special; however the latter one is definitely ULTIMATE…
Watch the video about our Tuc Tuc experience :-):
After a short visit of Mumbai’s R-City Mall (could be any other mall in any other major city), we decided for dinner in our room: DELICIOUS! Naan, Paratha, Dahi Batata Puri and Kingfisher beer.
Getting ready for Day 3 (Kolkata)…we will see good friends from the recent and long past.
